Group Classes vs. Private Lessons: Which Is Right for Your Child?

One of the most common questions we hear from parents at Dreams Music Academy is a simple one: should my child start in a group class or with private lessons? Both are great ways to learn, and the right answer depends on your child and your goals. Here is how to think it through.

How Private Lessons Work

A private lesson is one student and one teacher for the full session. The pace, the material, and the pieces are all built around that one child. If your child already loves an instrument, wants to move quickly, or is preparing for something specific like a recital or an audition, private instruction gives them the focused attention to get there.

How Group Classes Work

A group class puts a few students of a similar level together with one teacher. Kids learn the fundamentals side by side, play together, and feed off each other’s energy. Group classes usually cost less per session and carry less pressure, which makes them a comfortable first step for a brand new student.

Questions to Help You Decide

Is your child brand new to music? A group class is a low-pressure way to find out whether an instrument clicks before committing to weekly private lessons.

Does your child thrive around other kids or focus better one on one? Some students light up in a group. Others do their best work with undivided attention. You know your child best.

What is the goal? Fun, friends, and a first taste of music point toward a group. Faster progress and specific skills point toward private lessons.

Why Not Both?

Plenty of our students take a group class for the community and a weekly private lesson for focused growth. The two reinforce each other, and the group setting is a natural place to build the stage comfort that makes private-lesson recitals easier.
